Taylor Swift‘s fans have shown off their creativity by dressing up in elaborate costumes for the Eras tour. However, one accessory that almost every fan has had at each tour stop was one – or several – friendship bracelets. As the Eras tour comes to a close, some people are wondering why Swities started wearing friendship bracelets to Taylor’s concerts.
Why Do Taylor Swift Fans Wear Friendship Bracelets for the Eras Tour?
Fans got the idea to make and wear friendship bracelets to the Eras tour after Taylor mentioned the accessory in her song “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” which was featured on her 2022 album, Midnights.
“’Cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned . Everything you lose is a step you take,” she sings in the bridge of the song. “So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it / You’ve got no reason to be afraid.”
While the song isn’t featured on the Eras tour setlist, Taylor has performed “You’re On Your Own, Kid” as a surprise song during the show’s acoustic set several times.
Several fans have made bracelets that spell out names of Taylor’s songs or reference her career, and it’s become tradition for concertgoers to trade their friendship bracelets with friends and strangers at the shows.
Taylor Swift Has Acknowledged the Friendship Bracelets Worn at the Eras Tour
As Taylor traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to perform her Eras tour in October 2024, Caesars Superdome made sure the venue was appropriately decked out by wrapping a giant friendship bracelet around the exterior of the building.
Taylor reflected on the gesture during her October 25, 2024, show. “You’ve created traditions. You’ve created this mass movement of joy every time we play a show. And it makes me so proud, it really does,” she told the crowd, according to a video posted via X. “I just showed up one day and you guys were trading friendship bracelets and I was like, ‘That’s cool,’ and now there is a giant friendship bracelet on the outside of this stadium.”
“Which is so nice of them to do for us — but it’s even nicer of you guys to create things that went so far beyond what I ever expected for this tour,” the “Cruel Summer” singer continued.
Travis Kelce Wanted to Ask Taylor Swift Out With a Friendship Bracelet
Before Taylor confirmed her romance with Travis Kelce in September 2023, he revealed that he hoped to ask her out by giving her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it when he attended her Eras tour in July 2023.
“Well, I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis told brother Jason Kelce during their “New Heights” podcast. “So, I was little butthurt that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”
The Kansas City Chiefs athlete continued, “If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there [sic]. But I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it. … She doesn’t meet anybody, or at least she didn’t want to meet me, so I took it personal [sic].”
As fans know, Travis’ attempt eventually got to Taylor and they’ve been going strong ever since.
